ZMM’s services for this project include coordinating site investigative services (survey and geotechnical analysis), collaborating to complete the FEMA-required NEPA Environmental Analysis, site design, educational planning, as well as the design of the new school. ZMM provided comprehensive design services for the NKCES, including site-civil engineering, architecture, interior design, structural engineering, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) engineering.
For the new elementary school, Kanawha County Schools elected to utilize a curriculum delivery model that was originally developed during the planning for Edgewood Elementary School. The model does not have separate traditional classrooms, but rather utilizes Exploratorium spaces for each grade level. These spaces are designed to support a learning environment that focuses on hands-on and project-based learning, as well as technology integration. These Exploratorium spaces are located adjacent to rooms that are designed for direct teacher-led instruction. The connection of these spaces utilizes a moveable (and writeable) glass panel system to maximize flexibility and adaptability.
The exterior of the NKCES was designed to reflect the rural setting of the school. Instead of traditional brick, natural materials such as wood, stone, glass, and metal are highlighted. The vertical metal columns supporting the canopies and roof overhangs were developed to respond to the extractive industries with historic ties to the area. Other unique features of the school include active strategies to improve student safety, as well as a high-efficiency geothermal HVAC system.
