RIPLEY, W.Va. — The Alpine Theater got some encouraging news from the Ripley City Council at its March 4 meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike Phillips<\/a>, chair of the Main Street Ripley Design Committee and an architect with ZMM Architects and Engineers, shared information on the roof repair needed at the historic theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe initial response to leaks in the past was to patch,\u201d he said. \u201cThe last roof put on was spray silicone and cannot be patched. There are shingles underneath. None of these meet building codes and any warranties are voided.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 3,000 square foot roof has several leaks and issues with the gutters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe good news is that there are steel trusses and the Alpine is a sturdy structure,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cThe plan is to take the roof down to the planks, put a recovery board over that and a membrane roof. We are preparing documents for bidders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The estimated cost is between $75,000 and $100,000, including the marquee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The council approved City Clerk Tom Armstead to prepare a general budget revision of $50,000 to assist with the project. The item will be part of the March 18 agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is assuming you don\u2019t find grant funds,\u201d Mayor Carolyn Rader said. \u201cWe value that theater, and it is very well used.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project will be under the direction of ZMM through a collaboration with Partner Community Capital and Downtown Appalachia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
