Shepherdstown, W.Va. \u2014 Jefferson County Schools proudly dedicated the new Shepherdstown Elementary School on Thursday, December 11, celebrating a modern facility designed to support hands-on learning, outdoor exploration, and strong community connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new 57,445-square-foot building replaces the former 40,179-square-foot school and serves 318 students. Construction began in December 2023, with substantial completion reached in September 2025. Students officially start classes in the new building on January 6, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Principal Jodi Payne said the school\u2019s vision guided the design process from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSES is a safe and welcoming community that fosters curiosity, resilience, and collaboration to inspire all to be lifelong learners,\u201d Payne shared. \u201cI am excited to welcome future generations to a place where they will enroll, grow, and thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed to encourage exploration both inside and outside the classroom, the campus includes a courtyard, outdoor classroom and dining area, and a paved walking path that surrounds the school. Inside, students will enjoy a STEAM lab, flexible collaboration spaces, and \u201creading rounds\u201d built into the hallways to promote curiosity and movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JCS Deputy Superintendent of Operations Joyce White noted that these features reflect the strong role families, staff, and students had in shaping the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis building reflects a community that cares deeply about its children,\u201d White said. \u201cFrom the start, their ideas helped guide this work, and our partners brought those ideas to life. This is more than brick and mortar \u2014 it\u2019s an opportunity for students to learn in an environment built specifically for their success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new campus also strengthens ties with Shepherd University through the addition of a Pre-K classroom with an adjoining observation room, offering space for early learning support as well as real-world experience for university students preparing to enter the field of education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JCS Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bishop emphasized that the heart of the new school lies in the people who will use it every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe belief of Shepherdstown families, staff, and residents in what a school should be for students is reflected in every detail,\u201d said Bishop. \u201cTo the staff, your passion will bring these spaces to life. And to our students \u2014 this building was created for you, and I hope it inspires you every day you walk through its doors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dedication ceremony featured remarks from district and state leaders, a musical performance by the SES 5th Grade Chorus, and a celebratory ribbon-cutting, which followed the raising of the flag by SES students. In a special touch, students also created bear paw ornaments for guests to take home in honor of the school\u2019s new mascot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
