ONA — Cabell County Schools will soon receive a design update on what the new Ona Elementary School will look like.

Slated for construction near the existing school, the $18 million project is on schedule as architects work to finalize the first design renderings, Cabell County Schools Deputy Superintendent Justin Boggs said.
According to Boggs, the district will have a design meeting after the first of the year to review those renderings and provide feedback.

The district received over $16.9 million from the West Virginia School Board Authority in April 2024 to replace the aging elementary school constructed in 1939.

That award will be added to the district’s own $2 million commitment to the project, which Superintendent Tim Hardesty previously said, in combination with SBA funds, would fully cover the cost of the project.

In August 2024, the Cabell County Board of Education awarded a contract to ZMM Architects to handle the design phase. The district and ZMM have collaborated on several projects in the past, including the Woody Williams Center for Advanced Learning and Careers and the new Meadows Elementary School.
In action as recent as of October, the board approved a $24,400 contract with American GeoTech Inc. for site analysis services to ensure accurate subsurface data.

According to Boggs, work toward the project is in line with the district’s timeline for completion.
Due to SBA’s funding requirements, the school must be constructed by April 2027, when funds are set to expire.

Ashley Stephens, director of communications and family connections for Cabell County Schools, said the district’s design team has met several times with ZMM Architects throughout the process, offering input on design elements and district preferences ahead of ZMM’s presentation of preliminary renderings.

Stephens said that meeting is scheduled for next month.
