ZMM designed a comprehensive solution for a new school for Nicholas County Board of Education after Summersville Middle School and Summersville Elementary School were damaged by floods in 2016.

A FEMA-funded project, the Summersville Academic Complex is a replacement for Summersville Middle School and Summersville Elementary School. Glade Creek Elementary School will also move into this facility, serving a total of more than 1,000 elementary and middle school students.

The building is a load-bearing masonry structure with brick veneer and consists of six academic wings, two gymnasiums with a mezzanine overlooking the middle school gym, a 550-seat auditorium, two separate dining rooms served by one central kitchen, a STEM lab, a media center, and a third-party health and dental clinic. There are separate parent and bus drop-off/pick-up drive loops for elementary and middle school students. The 90-acre site is also designed for a football stadium with a running track, soccer field, baseball field, and softball field.
