The renovation and additions to Shady Spring High School in Raleigh County, West Virginia consisted of a large 50,000 SF addition to the 1960s school. The building was fully renovated and expanded while students and staff occupied the building.

The construction phasing schedule involved 15 different phases that allowed the contractors access to separate areas of the building for renovation. As phases were completed, the faculty and students would vacate an area for the next phase of renovation and move into a renovated portion.

The additions were designed to be across the front of the existing building that resulted in a completely new look for the school. The new additions included a secure entrance lobby, administration and guidance area, classrooms, art rooms, band room, 1,600-seat gymnasium and locker rooms, weight room, and a Hall of Fame at the community entrance.

The existing school featured an underutilized courtyard that was long and narrow. To improve circulation through the building, the courtyard was filled in with new construction. This construction featured a multimedia center, centralized STEM lab with 3D printers, mechatronics lab, and a shop area with a digital laser cutter. The multimedia center and STEM lab formed a new technology hub for the school. Natural light from high clerestory windows bring an abundance of natural light into this area of the building.

The entire building was renovated including all-new kitchen equipment, expanded cafeteria dining, and new science labs, some of which have direct access into the new STEM lab. The expanded high school was designed to accommodate 1,000 students. The project was completed in August 2018 before students returned from summer break.
