The Wood County Resiliency Center is not just a building. It is infrastructure and an adaptable resource for whatever challenges the future may hold.

Leveraging American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds, Wood County Commission President Blair Couch envisioned a dynamic "Swiss Army Knife" of a building that would serve the community in times of need and beyond.

The facility was designed to be an adaptable building that could respond to a variety of emergency events, food and healthcare distribution, and mass casualty situations. Drive-through bays and a commercial kitchen further enhance the building’s ability to support food distribution or critical medical services when needed. The facility also provides flexible areas and office areas for county departments and expands local court spaces.

When not in use for emergencies, it is a high-quality community hub. The facility is a driver of economic and community development for the region as it is attractive to groups and organizations for conferences, weddings, and gatherings. The main meeting room accommodates up to 400 people for banquets or events, with additional rooms available for breakout sessions.

J.B. McCuskey, Attorney General and former State Auditor, shared at the Resiliency Center ribbon cutting, “We could not allow this money to be spent on things that were fleeting. We begged and pleaded with local governments to make this money turn into actual infrastructure.”

When thinking about making West Virginia attractive to young families, McCuskey said, “That starts and ends with us rebuilding our communities. That is to make them to look and shine like people expect them to. These are the type of projects that enable us to sell West Virginia and our values to the rest of the world.”

The Center’s design blends modern functionality with a visual connection to nearby historical structures, ensuring it remains a resilient resource for the future.

There’s nothing like this in Wood County. The ability to respond to different issues, that’s why it’s resilient,” shared Commission President Couch.
