Goodwill on Charleston’s West Side to become outlet, bins store

We are proud of our longstanding relationship with Goodwill Industries of the Summit providing design support for projects such as the Virginia Street retail location conversion to an outlet store as well as many other retail locations throughout the region. We are honored to also contribute to Goodwill’s mission of preparing job seekers for in-demand careers. The following was coverage from WOWK TV 13 related to the conversion of the Virginia Street location into a outlet store.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — A popular thrift store in our region is nearing its final day of operation, but it isn’t closing for good; it’s getting a makeover.

The Goodwill on Charleston’s Virginia Street will soon be transformed into West Virginia’s second outlet, or bins, store.

After the renovation is complete, the inside will be full of large bins, instead of hangers or yellow price tags. Shoppers will have to go on a treasure hunt to find their next sweater or pair of shoes.

Goodwill says customers will pay based on the weight of their hauls, rather than a set dollar amount.

“There will be bins out on the floor where people can source items, and then once they collect all the items that they want to collect and put it in the baskets or bags they have,” said Jamon Schmidt, Director of Marketing and Communications for Goodwill Industries of the Summit, “Then, we weigh it and then therefore then it is priced.”

Nearly all of the items inside these bins will be secondhand misfits. Items that didn’t get picked up inside a retail store will then be brought back for sale.

“It’s a way for that donation to get a second life,” Schmidt said. “So, for example, if you have an item, a dress or a shirt that goes through a store, maybe it doesn’t get sold at that store. Well then, after that, an outlet allows it to have one more second chance, and then obviously at a cheaper price for the community.”

The store will reopen as an outlet in 2026. The exact opening date has yet to be determined by Goodwill, but they do say that the decision will be made before the new year.

Goodwill also says donation procedures will remain the same, as well as operations at the location’s Prosperity Center, which offers job fairs and other career development opportunities.
