HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) — Back to school season usually means new school supplies for students and teachers. However, for those who will be attending Meadows Elementary School in Cabell County, they’re receiving a new school building.
The new learning center, built just down the road from the old location, is going to look very different for students at the start of the school year.

During a tour of the nearly complete facility, Cabell County Schools Superintendent Tim Hardesty addressed some of the upgrades the new facility has that the old location was severely lacking.
“It had several different stairs in it. It was not ADA accessible without going outside and making some very difficult navigation to get from one spot to the other. There is no hindrance for any student. We’re gonna be able to meet their needs regardless of what those are in every classroom,” Hardesty says.
The new location has been built with inclusivity, accessibility, and creativity in mind with handicapped accessibility, being all on one level with no stairs, and unique architecture to promote creative learning.
The one-of-a-kind learning center also includes new playground equipment, lockers, open learning spaces, and can house around 235 students.
The original completion date would have delayed learning for students but Neighborgall Construction President and Owner C.R. Neighborgall says they are happy to report that the building will be ready to go before the school year starts.
“What allowed this to finish early is the complete cooperation from the three legs of the stool the designers, the board of education and the contractor use. Watching those kids and the people come into this building, that’s the payoff,” Neighborgall says.
Hardesty says this new school will provide an innovative and fresh start for the future of education in Cabell County.
“I’m just excited for what this future holds for not only the students that are coming here next month, but the entire generation that will be using this school for the next 50 plus years,” Hardesty says.
An official ribbon cutting will be held during the grand opening for the new facility on August 11th.
